What clients think they want vs what they actually need (visually speaking!)
At Workspace Snap, i’ve seen it all: the “just make it pop” requests, pinterest boards filled with very different images, the obsession with shallow depth of field that makes even office mugs look like Renaissance still life.
And while I love a good trend as much as the next photographer, I endeavour to help clients move from flashy to strategic, from “this looks cool” to “this feels right—for us.”
Let’s break down some popular photography misconceptions I encounter—and how I gently (okay, sometimes boldly) guide our clients toward visuals that actually serve their brand.
The Filter Fable: Trendy vs Timeless
What they ask for: “Can we use that matte Instagram filter?”
What they really need: A consistent visual identity that doesn’t scream 2019.
Trendy edits come and go, but your brand doesn’t want to look like a #throwback post by next quarter. We steer clients toward colour grading and composition choices that feel fresh and age well. Think brand palette, lighting cues, and intentional mood—not a random LUT pack slapped on post-shoot.
The Hero Image Fixation
What they ask for: One killer shot for the homepage.
What they really need: A library of cohesive images that tell a story across platforms.
That killer hero shot? Important. But your brand’s daily workhorse is often the quiet shot: a tidy corner, a relaxed team moment, a branded detail. I create collections, not one-hit wonders—so your website, proposals, LinkedIn posts and internal decks all speak the same visual language.
The Model Myth
What they ask for: Stock-perfect “people” with Colgate smiles.
What they really need: Real humans. Doing real things. In their real environment.
Posed, polished models have their place—but nothing builds trust like showing the actual humans behind your business. We guide clients to embrace team candids, genuine interactions, and honest moments. Even mugshots (the tea-break kind, not the police-record kind) can become branding gold.
Guiding Clients from Idea to Identity
So how do we bridge the gap between what’s cool and what works?
We start with questions. Lots of them.
- What’s the one feeling you want clients to have when they land on your site?
- What do you do differently—and how can we show that visually?
- Where will these images live, and what should they quietly communicate?
Once we understand your essence, the magic happens: we design a shoot that’s as thoughtful as it is effortless. Lighting, location, styling—it’s all shaped around your brand, not someone else’s aesthetic.
We trade fads for focus. Ego for clarity. And fleeting filters for visual identity that grows with your business.
